Treatment of Peri-implantitis
At the stage of peri-implant mucositis, the inflammation is restricted to the gums and the condition is completely reversible. If, however, the problem is not cured, peri-implant mucositis is likely to develop into peri-implantitis, a disease similar to periodontitis of natural teeth.
More specifically, bacteria go deeper under the gums and infect the bone of the jaw surrounding the implants. If peri-implantitis is at a very advanced stage and has destroyed much of the bone, the implant that is suffering falls or it needs extraction.
The treatment of peri-implantitis includes the following phases:
- oral hygiene instructions. This is a lesson in which specialized staff of our clinic practically teaches you, according to your oral needs, the most effective way of oral hygiene in both around natural teeth and implants.
- non-surgical phase of treatment. In this phase, under local anesthesia, we remove pathogenic bacteria, plaque and calculus from the surface of the implants both over the gingiva and below them with special tools and antiseptic solutions. At this stage, the contribution of the laser for better removal of debris, disinfection of the area and improvement of the surface of the bone surrounding the implant is also important.
- surgical phase of treatment. In cases where bone loss is extensive, surgical removal of inflammatory tissue by special tools and laser is performed in conjunction with the use of bone grafts and specific membranes for bone regeneration around the implant where this is necessary and feasible accompanied by the appropriate antibiotic pattern.
